Women in Jazz: women
in standard jazz
by Laura Pigozzi
A recital of feminine feelings
The idea of Women in Jazz is to tell stories which are
behind some standard jazz.
Women in Jazz are the greatest singers - like Ella Fitzgerald,
Billie Holiday, Sara Vaughan- as well as all women who felt passion,
rage, disappointment, craziness, irony, bitterness and joy. It
is about all women.
The recital plot unravels itself through themes such as a long
waiting ('Round Midnight), a passion (Sophisticated Lady),
a fate (The man I love and Calling you), an illusion (Angel Eyes),
a running into the twin soul (Corcovado, Wave), a coming
back (Chega de Saudade), a feminine masochism (All of me), a southern
atmosphere (Georgia on my mind), an optimistic mood (On
the sunny side of the street) and an eternal love (Our
love is here to stay).
The recital tributes a special homage to Billy Holiday: some
pages from her autobiography introduce her song God bless the
child.
